Why do people such as Christians, believe that we are basically evil?

Personally I don't believe people are evil, evil is something that people want to become it is a form of hatred for mankind, imperfection is not evil only one person is perfect and we are nowhere near him every living creature is imperfect, it is just the way of the world and one day everybody will be perfect but until that day comes we have to do the best we can.
