Return policy on shoes?

I bought a pair of shoes the beginning of Sept. The shoes got holes in them and I was not wearing them all the time. I cant send it back to the company bec. I don't have the box or the receipt that they require. the company told me to go back to the store and have the store return it to them. 2 weeks later I went back to the store to see what happened and they told me that I could get a new pair for half price. Do you think this is fair or should I get a whole new pair for free. I have a feeling they never sent it back to begin with annd felt they would just take a loss with selling me a pair for half price\. I feel they should give me a new pair for free. What do you think.
